Published six days a week in newspapers across the nation, her columns offered a snapshot of her daily life and thoughts on important issues. Tokyo added, “But whether and when the order will be received by the first-line units is difficult to foresee.” Anticipating difficulties, three princes of the Imperial family were dispatched to personally deliver the news to senior commanders. Montgomery modified the plan, expanding the size of the beachhead and the number of divisions in the initial assault.

News of Japan’s intention to surrender reached Washington, D.C., on the evening of August 14 due to the time zone difference with Tokyo. Yet by September 2, 1945, celebrations of Japan’s surrender had already been taking place around the United States for weeks. Some of the most iconic photographs of V-J Day celebrations, if not the war itself, were actually taken on August 14, 1945, not September 2.
